Mental Health Series Event Recap

13 Feb 2019, Posted by Jaime Pacilio in Uncategorized

This morning I had the opportunity to attend a panel discussion on “Growing Up in North Texas: Removing the Stigma Around Mental Illness.”

The panel and event were put on by a non-profit organization, Children At Risk North Texas. The event was co-sponsored by the DFW Hospital Council and NAMI North Texas.

The keynote speaker, Ciara Dockery of Vibrant Emotional Health and NFL Life Line, shared a video that I felt called to share.
Men’s mental health is the focus of this video. The video is simple, direct, and hard-hitting – it also stars Michael Irvin.

After the keynote speaker, a conversation took place among a panel of professionals from Parkland Health, Medical City Green Oaks and Baylor Scott & White to find out what their systems have in place to engage in preventative care regarding mental health awareness and care.

What 2 major DFW systems are doing:

  1. Parkland Health was the first system in the nation to administer universal suicide screening of 3 to 6 questions to all patients that walk through their doors. Since the program started 4 years ago, Parkland has completed more than 2 million screenings and believes that through these screenings they identified over 180 people that were extremely high risk and early intervention kept them alive.
  2. Baylor Scott and White Health have an amazing initiative that has them committed to training 10,000 people in DFW on Mental Health First Aid within three years. Baylor is hoping to educate regular people on mental health first aid to keep catastrophes from happening. Learn more about the initiative, click here.
