Redefining the Experience: A Tour of Baylor Scott & White PGA
24 Feb 2026, Posted by in Events, HealthcareThis morning, Lindsay West and I had the opportunity to attend Healthcare Horizons: Facility Tour & Networking hosted by Women In Healthcare at Baylor Scott & White PGA. It was an impressive experience.
We heard directly from Ryan Gebhardt, Hospital President, who shared a compelling perspective: this hospital was designed to function as a system, not simply operate as a standalone facility. Every element, from planning to partnerships, reflects that intentional mindset.
Strategically located at the apex where multiple regional trail systems converge, the campus truly lives into its identity as the “Heart of Wellness.” Even the surrounding street names reinforce that sense of purpose and place. The 10-year master plan outlines thoughtful phased growth, with expansions already underway and the new heart hospital slated to open one year from now.
What stood out most was the design philosophy. Rather than touring other hospitals, the team leaned into Customer-Centricity by studying experience-driven destinations like AT&T Stadium and luxury resorts in Cabo to better understand hospitality, flow, and the consumer experience. That influence is evident throughout the campus.
They are also pursuing WELL Building certification, reflected in the abundance of natural light, expansive windows, and wellness-driven features, including a microgreens greenhouse in the cafeteria. It is a subtle but powerful reminder that health extends beyond clinical care.
Nature is woven beautifully into the story of the hospital. A macro interpretation of Texas bluebonnets begins outside with sculptural installations welcoming patients and continues inside the lobby, where suspended floral-inspired art hangs overhead. The surrounding “fields” and wildflowers influence everything from interior artwork to exterior gathering spaces like the Galaxy Grove play court. No detail was spared.
The Labor & Delivery floor is truly a labor of love. Focus groups helped shape everything from in-room amenities to testing tray tables and curating menu options. Real patient input translated directly into thoughtful design decisions.
Intentionality extends beyond patient experience to staff culture as well. Team members enter through a “Hype Hallway” designed to energize and encourage them at the start of each shift. Bold, inspirational messaging lines the corridor, reinforcing purpose and reminding caregivers of the impact they make every day. It is a simple but powerful acknowledgment that staff wellness directly influences patient care.
Another meaningful differentiator is their commitment to both local partnerships and cultural connection. Instead of defaulting to national chains, they partnered with businesses like White Rhino Coffee and Full Bloom Florists, reinforcing community connection while enhancing the overall experience.
They have also partnered with Academy of Country Music and Gibson Gives to promote “Healing Through the Power of Music.” The initiative features a striking guitar wall showcasing custom Gibson guitars alongside photos of country music icons. Patients can scan QR codes that link to curated playlists on Amazon Music with themes such as motivate and inspire, reinforcing the role music can play in healing and emotional well-being.
Grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and see firsthand how visionary leadership and intentional design are redefining what a healthcare campus can be.
