About

SBL has been involved with two master planning assignments at the 357-bed Houston Northwest Medical Center:  the first was a limited study which primarily focused on Surgical Services, Sterile Processing, Materials Management, Obstetrical Services, and Women’s’ Imaging.  The facility had two separate surgical suites which they desired to combine primarily for operational reasons while maintaining an appearance of two separate suites for image reasons (Inpatient Suite versus Outpatient Suite).  The resulting project created a new 10-room Inpatient Suite which was physically connected to the 6-room Outpatient Suite.  In the process, Sterile Processing and Materials Management services were also expanded while the inpatient Dialysis unit was relocated and expanded.  Doubling Obstetrical Services (from 3,400 to a projected 5,800 births per year) or expanding Women’s Imaging was ultimately not included as part of the phase 1 priority and was, therefore, not addressed with the initial expansion project.

Most recently, SBL has been involved in a more comprehensive Master Plan involving the majority of remaining departments within the hospital.  Primary areas of study dealt with additional beds, establishment of an Angio Suite, expansion and/or renovation of an Endoscopy Suite, Ultrasound Suite, Emergency Services, Hospital Lab and Pathology as well as a new parking garage.   In this study, several scenarios were evaluated which studied expansion of the facility in multiple locations in order to accommodate needs of departments throughout the facility.

The ultimate Phase 1 Project will involve a 52-station Emergency Department to support approximately 90,00 – 100,000 visits per year (with CT, Ultrasound, and General Imaging Procedure Rooms in the ED Expansion), 20 new Intensive Care beds, and additional Med-Surg / Telemetry beds in a tower expansion.
